Tras el inicio del estallido social se registraron una serie de saqueos en supermercados y farmacias del país, entre otros comercios, y también incendios en estos mismos. En esas fechas, uno de los afectados fue el Tottus de Puente Alto, ubicado en Avenida Eyzaguirre con Balmaceda, que por años operó en esa esquina, y tras el 18 de octubre se vio obligado a cerrar.
Los días siguientes del estallido social, el Tottus, ubicado a pasos de la Plaza Puente Alto, estuvo escoltado por militares para evitar nuevos saqueos, marcando una imagen para los vecinos.
En marzo de 2020, el supermercado, que ya estaba clausurado tras los saqueos los meses previos, sufrió un fuerte incendio que terminó por liquidar al Tottus, y dejó a Puente Alto con un supermercado menos, y con un amplio espacio inutilizado.
Por más de cinco años, el edificio en el que estaba el supermercado se mantuvo cerrado. En los primeros años mantuvo los colores verdes característicos de Tottus, pero se vio afectado por incivilidades, al tratarse de un espacio prácticamente abandonado. Posteriormente, este año, mantuvo una cortina metálica para cambiar el aspecto anterior y renovar el frontis.
Finalmente, en noviembre el antiguo supermercado completó su transición a un nuevo tipo de comercio, y el recinto de Puente Alto volvió a abrir sus puertas tras más de cinco años, esta vez como un mall chino. Se trata del ABC Centro Comercial, que lleva un mes operando, con una amplia variedad de productos, característico de este tipo de comercio.
La reacción de vecinos de Puente Alto a esta propuesta ha sido variada. Si bien hay quienes valoran que el recinto abandonado vuelva con una nueva oferta, también hay quienes apuntan a que existe una gran cantidad de mall chinos en la comuna.
