Hoy en día tengamos muy arraigado el concepto de ir a hacer la compra a un supermercado. Lo de coger el carrito y recorrer los pasillos llenando la cesta con productos -muchos que no necesitamos-, no nos sorprende. Pero el modelo de autoservicio es algo que no siempre se ha practicado. Antes, el comercio tradicional se basaba en las tiendas de ultramarinos, colmados o mercados. Ahí, pedías al comerciante los alimentos que deseabas y él te preparaba el pedido.
Pero el mundo retail cambió totalmente en 1916 gracias a la genial idea de Clarence Saunders. Este norteamericano, que había trabajado en varias tiendas de comida, se dio cuenta de que el método típico de venta de alimentos a través de un mostrador era lento. Además, no aprovechaba todo el potencial de venta. Como el propio dependiente servía los productos, se formaban largas colas. Esa espera hacía que, al fin y al cabo, se dejara de hacer más dinero.
Saunders decidió poner en marcha un negocio donde cambiaban las reglas del juego: el cliente podía autoservirse y ser más autónomo durante el proceso de compra. Así, el 6 de septiembre de 1916, Clarence abrió su primera tienda en Memphis. Se decantó por un nombre bastante peculiar: Piggly Wiggly® y su imagen era un cerdito sonriente, que no pasó desapercibido. Su traducción vendría a ser algo así como «cerdito serpenteante».
El cerdito que lo cambió todo
Muchos predijeron que esta idea fracasaría estrepitosamente, opinión que también se acentuó con el nombre elegido y la imagen que se empleaba. Pero lo cierto es que se trataba de una idea totalmente novedosa para aquella época. Ese supermercado no tenía nada que ver con el resto de comercios. Al entrar disponías de una pila de cestas -por aquel entonces de madera- para guardar los productos, y el local estaba dividido en pasillos y estanterías para que el cliente se sirviera él mismo, algo totalmente inaudito hasta ese momento.
En los primeros meses se confirmó el éxito del considerado primer supermercado del mundo y Saunders decidió conceder franquicias a cientos de minoristas de alimentación para que explotaran sus propias tiendas Piggly Wiggly®. De hecho, a finales de 1916, Memphis ya contaba con nueve supermercados de esta cadena repartidos por la ciudad. Clarence Saunders confiaba 100% en su proyecto, llegando a decir: «Un día Memphis estará orgullosa de Piggly Wiggly®… Y todos los hombres dirán… que los Piggly Wigglies se multiplicarán y llenarán la tierra con más y más cosas para comer», según comenta Mike Freeman, autor del libro Clarence Saunders and the Founding of Piggly Wiggly: The Rise & Fall of a Memphis Maverick, en el que narra la historia del empresario.
El crecimiento de Piggly Wiggly® fue meteórico, y en 1923 la cadena ya contaba con 1267 tiendas (más de la mitad propiedad de la empresa y el resto franquiciados). Saunders se había convertido en un gran empresario -la empresa llegó a salir en Bolsa-, pero una mala gestión de las acciones le obligó a vender la compañía y entrar en bancarrota. Después, lo intentó abriendo unas tiendas con su propio nombre. Y, aunque logró recuperarse con otros innovadores negocios como Keedoozle en 1937, considerado el primer supermercado automatizado de Estados unidos, o Foodelectric, un sistema precursor del autopago, nunca revalidó el éxito del cerdito.
¿Por qué eligió ese nombre?
A día de hoy, Piggly Wiggly® cuenta con más de 500 tiendas repartidas por 18 estados. Pero lo que sigue generando mucha expectación es el porqué de un nombre tan peculiar, que se ha mantenido a lo largo de sus 127 años de historia. Clarence Saunders siempre mantuvo el hype al respecto y se mostraba reacio a cualquier explicación sobre el origen.
Una de las principales teorías que solía contar la gente de su entorno -y que refleja la web de la cadena- es que un día, mientras viajaba en tren, miró por la ventana y se fijó en varios cerditos que estaban intentando pasar por debajo de una valla. Aquella imagen le llevó a pensar en la original rima.
Por otro lado, al ser preguntado por el porqué de esa denominación, también solía responder: «Para que la gente se haga esa misma pregunta».
